Question Tags

Menurut Swan (2005: 465) menyebutkan, “Question tags are the small questions that often come at the ends of sentences in speech, and sometimes in informal writing (Question tag itu adalah pertanyaan-pertanyaan pendek yang sering muncul di akhir kalimat pada saat berbicara, dan kadang muncul pada tulisan informal)."

Dengan kata lain Question Tag  adalah susunan kalimat Tanya yang tidak memerlukan jawaban lagi. Misalnya di dalam bahasa Indonesia, kita sering mendengar orang berkata, kamu kemarin pergi ke Bandung, kan?

kata "kan?" inilah yang kita sebut dengan question tag dalam bahasa Inggris.

Ketentuan penggunaan Question Tag :

Contoh :

1.       You don’t want to help me, do you? 

2.       Sam went to Bandung yesterday, didn’t He?

3.       Munier can read a book quickly, can’t He?

4.       Let us keep our environment, shall we?

5.       I am a student, aren't I? / I am late, aren't I?

6.       Take the books on the table, will You?

7.       There's something wrong, isn't there?

7.       Everybody does not bring their books, do they?

8.       Nothing bad happened, did it?

Notes :

* Untuk kalimat negatif biasanya disingkat, walaupun bentuk sempurnanya dapat digunakan dalam percakapan. 

- That’s the teacher, isn’t it?

* Pada kalimat yang memiliki konotasi negatif seperti never, no, nobody, hardly, dll, question tag harus positif.

- You never say that, do you? (bukan don't you)

- It is no good, is it? (bukan isn't it)
